This page will highlight some of the things that the residents of Amesville are doing to create a sustainable future. Many small towns in Appalachia are struggling for survival. They have lost businesses, housing, population, schools and other key features of their culture and heritage. They struggle economically, but have a rich heritage, available farm land, people with innovative ideas and an ethic of hard work. Hopefully this website can connect people with these ideas, create dialogues about our future and inspire young people to create a new road forward for Amesville. Solar Electric: Mary Ann Westendorf and Gary Goosman had Drake Chamberlin install a 2.2 kilowatt/hour system on their roof to generate 80% of their electrical needs. 3/15/2010 Geothermal heating: Frank and Catherine Hare installed geothermal heating onto their house to heat and cool their home ; reducing gas usage substantially. Grain crops in production: Michelle Ajamian and Brandon Jaeger started testing the production of grain crops for the Athens area and opened the Shag Bark Grain Mill to augment their local food efforts. A wave of gardens: 30% of Amesville residents had vegetable gardens last year; saving energy and increasing nutrition.
