Amesville Becomes an AARP Community Challenge Winner
Amesville, Ohio; [July 28,2021] The Village of Amesville will receive a community challenge award from AARP to provide a pollinator garden in Gifford Park. Amesville, as part of the “Bee City USA” initiative will create expanded wildflower gardens to provide food and habitat for native pollinators (honey bees, bumble bees, butterflies and more) with support from this AARP funding. Mayor Goosman said, “Our community let it be known that we understand the importance of sustaining pollinators, and want to make the city more pollinator friendly. We are grateful to AARP for providing their support.”
The AARP Community Challenge is a grant program to make tangible improvements to communities that jump-start long-term change. It is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which supports the efforts of cities, towns, neighborhoods and rural areas to become great places to live for people of all ages. Bee City USA fosters ongoing dialogue in urban areas to raise awareness of the role native pollinators play in our communities and what each of us can do to provide them with healthy habitat. Research has shown significant declines in pollinator population sizes and ranges globally. The Bee City USA program endorses a set of commitments, defined in a resolution, for creating sustainable habitats for native pollinators, which are vital to feeding the planet. Incorporated cities, towns, and communities across America are invited to make these commitments and become certified as a Bee City USA affiliate.
